Curiosity #90 - Faaaaaaaack! Roy was right.

🎤 Quotable quotes: “Don't you dare settle for fine."
— Roy Kent
We were walking through an airport recently when someone noticed our Lead It Like Lasso patch and asked if it was related to Ted Lasso.
Naturally, we said yes.
We explained that while Ted may be the title character, the leadership lessons come from all over Richmond. Ted, Rebecca. Sam. Keeley.
The person nodded along and then said:
"Yeah, everyone except Roy Kent."
We laughed (our bad for forgetting Roy!).
Because Roy Kent might be one of the best leadership teachers in the entire series.
We just didn't have enough time in the airport to explain why.
So let's do it now.
🏟 Why This Matters for You
When people think about Roy Kent, they usually think about the growling.
The cursing.
The permanent expression that suggests he'd rather be anywhere else.
What they don't always notice is that Roy consistently demonstrates two of the most important leadership skills there are:
Empathy.
And expectation.
Most leaders naturally lean toward one or the other.
Roy somehow manages both.
Story #1: The Teammate
After Isaac charges into the stands to confront a fan using a slur, Roy reluctantly ends up speaking at a press conference.
There, he tells a story from his playing days.
Roy had made an inappropriate joke about a teammate's wife.
The teammate responded by punching Roy repeatedly.
At the time, all he saw was the reaction.
What he didn't know was that the teammate and his wife had recently lost a child.
Suddenly, everything looked different.
The behavior didn't change.
But Roy's understanding did.
And that changed everything.
It's one of the most important leadership lessons in the entire series.
Every day we're surrounded by people carrying burdens we know nothing about.
The employee whose performance suddenly slipped.
The colleague who seems distracted.
The friend who isn't quite themselves.
The easy thing is to judge the behavior.
The harder thing is to understand the person.
Ted called it being curious, not judgmental.
Roy learned it the hard way.
Story #2: Fine
Then there's one of our favorite Roy moments.
Rebecca introduces Roy to her boyfriend.
He's nice. Polite. Successful. But talks alot!
Perfectly acceptable.
And after meeting him, Roy gives Rebecca a piece of advice that is simple enough to fit on a bumper sticker:
"Don't you dare settle for fine."
What makes the line so powerful is that it isn't really about dating.
It's about life.
It's about refusing to accept average when you're capable of extraordinary.
It's about recognizing potential and refusing to let people shrink themselves to fit comfortable circumstances.
Great leaders do this all the time.
They see possibilities before others do.
And they lovingly refuse to let people settle.
The Leadership Lesson Hiding Between the Two
At first glance, these stories have nothing in common.
One is about compassion.
The other is about challenge.
One says: Understand what people are carrying.
The other says: Help them carry more than they think they can.
But together, they reveal something important.
Great leadership lives between those two moments.
Deep empathy.
And high expectations.
Understand people's struggles.
But don't let those struggles define them.
Learn their story.
Then help them write a better one.
That's what Ted did.
That's what Roy learned.
And that's what the best leaders do every day.
🏁 Final Thought
Roy Kent spent three seasons teaching us that leadership isn't always warm and fuzzy.
Sometimes it growls. Sometimes it swears. Sometimes it tells you exactly what you need to hear.
But at his best, Roy reminds us that people deserve two things:
To be understood.
And to be challenged.
The magic happens when we do both.
