— Jeremy Smith

Leadership Rules with Jeremy Smith

🎧 This Week’s Guest: Jeremy Smith

Jeremy Smith doesn't just question higher education.

He rebuilt it.

A multiple-exit startup founder and CEO of pega6, Jeremy believes we've accepted a strange reality for far too long.

Students spend four years and hundreds of thousands of dollars preparing for a career...

Then show up on day one with no idea how to do the job.

Jeremy saw it when he graduated.

He saw it in every new hire after him.

And eventually, he decided the problem wasn't the students.

It was the system.

💥 Leadership Rule of the Week

Hire great people. Then get out of their way.

Jeremy's leadership philosophy is wonderfully simple.

If you hire talented people only to micromanage them, you've wasted everyone's time.

Trust them.

Coach them.

Clear obstacles.

Then let them do what you hired them to do.

Great leaders don't create dependency.

They create ownership.

💡 Other Topics We Loved

• Why credentials are often confused with capability
• How experiential learning builds real mastery
• Why failure isn't the opposite of learning, it's the mechanism of learning
• How AI is reshaping what employers actually need
• Why "year one of employment" might be the best classroom ever created
• The surprising reason coding bootcamps often fall short

One of our favorite insights?

Jeremy's curriculum contains almost no lectures.

Students simply build.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Because you don't become a great product builder by reading about product building.

You become one by building products.

It's a deceptively simple idea.

But it's how nearly every meaningful skill in life is actually learned.

🍪 Biscuits with the Boss:

Ask your team:

What's something you're good at today that you could never have learned from a textbook?

Then ask:

How could we create more opportunities for people to learn by doing instead of just learning by listening?

Sometimes experience is the curriculum.

🌎 This week in Here - There - Every F’ing where

Oh this is Marnie working in her (parked) car after a college application bootcamp prepping for a busy two weeks of here, there and everywhere. While she waits she is rebooking flights (ah summer weather!) to Kansas City. She and Nick and doing a keynote - then a virtual preso the next day in SC. And next week it is a college in MD and a couple stops in WI. All the letters! (Oh and we will have a special Season 4 treat for your next week :) )

Believe!

Nick & Marnie

Curiosity #93 - Rivals Make Us Better
🎤 Quotable quotes: “Sport has the power to unite people in a way that little else does." — Nelson Mandela Later today, England and Argentina meet in a World Cup semifinal. That sentence alone should be enough to make football fans sit up a little straighter. These two nations have history. Real history. There have been brilliant goals, painful exits, red cards, revenge, redemption, and one ver...
Curiosity #92 - The Reverse Career Fair (and so much more)
🎤 Quotable Quote“You have to earn the right to have those conversations.”— Jason Van Nus   🎧 This Week’s Guest: Jason Van Nus Jason Van Nus calls himself a "gentle disruptor." We think that's about right. As the CEO of the new WIN Regional College and Career Academy, Jason isn't trying to throw out education. He's trying to make it work better. His belief is simple: High sc...
Curiosity #91 - Futbol Is Life!
🎤 Quotable quotes: “Futbol Is Life!" — Dani Rojas At the time we're writing this, we're in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup. And honestly? It's been fantastic. Today, both the United States and England take the pitch with a chance to advance to the Round of 16. We'll be cheering for both. (Yes, we know... that's a dangerous thing to admit.) Watching the World Cup got us thinking about...
