đŸŽ€Quotable Quote

“I believe in hope. I believe in 'Believe.'
— Ted

Yeah -Ted said it, but for this week’s guest on Leadership Rules, it’s a lifestyle.

Milam Miller isn’t just called the real-life Ted Lasso, he earns it from leading a $20M cross-cultural sales team in European football to founding a leadership practice rooted in kindness and confidence.

This week’s episode of Leadership Rules features Milam, who gets how soft skills are a a superpower. His leadership story is full of perspective shifts, permission slips, and powerful questions.

Leadership Rules | Milam Miller

🟩 "Charisma isn’t about me-me-me. It’s about them-them-them."
Milam unpacks the ABCs of charisma: Authenticity, Boldness, and Curiosity, and why they matter now more than ever.

🟩 "Don’t fake it. Frame it."
That tired old “fake it till you make it” advice? Milam calls it out for what it is: exhausting. His alternative? Start messy. Stay honest. Let people cheer for your growth.

🟩 "Grit or quit?"
Sometimes the strongest leadership move is walking away from the wrong thing. Milam’s story of quitting corporate is a familiar one in recognizing when a job is one degree off from your purpose and realigning before five years fly by.

đŸȘ Biscuits with the Boss:

What’s one “soft skill” you secretly believe is actually your leadership superpower?
(Bonus points if you share it with us. We are curious, not judgmental.)

🏅 Whistle. Whistle.

You’re not “stuck.” You’re just scared to change.
Milam’s episode is your call to either grit through it—or gracefully quit it.
Be honest. Are you on a path you chose, or one you just didn’t get off?

📚Beard’s collection:

📘 Milam’s book, The Charisma Craft: A Modern Leadership Guide to Enhance Your Riz Factor, drops June 2025. We got a sneak peek. Yes, you’ll want to preorder.

📖 Cain, Susan. Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. 2013.
This one’s for the Tim Duncans and Derek Jeters of the world. Cain explores how quiet confidence can be a leadership strength, not a liability. Perfect for anyone who thinks charisma only comes in extrovert packaging.

📖 Pressfield, Steven. Turning Pro: Tap Your Inner Power and Create Your Life’s Work. 2018.
When Milam talked about being “one degree off” and choosing to quit corporate life, this book instantly came to mind. Pressfield helps you recognize resistance, name your turning point, and choose the path that’s truly yours.

🌎 This week in Here - There - Every F’ing where

We had the pleasure of doing a book signing at the LATimes Festival of Books! This is the largest book festival in the world (at most of those people really like Rebecca Yarros and Fourth Wing ;) fwiw we do too). We had a blast meeting so many Ted Lasso fans.

Side note:

If you are playing along at home (with a very fine attention to detail), then you might recognize our recommendation of Quiet by Susan Cain. The book has power that we saw in play this week. We talk with a lot of folks who are looking for internships or jobs. This week we talked to an introvert who had been told that he came off scattered and "all over the place" in his interview. So we did two things: 1) We helped him identify his core values and how to tell his story aligned to those values and 2) We suggested he read Quiet. Forty-five pages in and with a clear understanding of himself and he nailed his interview and got an internship!

If you (or someone you know) is feeling stuck and looking for work, forward this to them. Our goal is to help folks find their dream career on their path to becoming the best version of themself!

Barbecue Sauce!

Marnie & Nick

P.S. Question for you - Do you think we should produce an audio version of Lead It Like Lasso? Very curious.

Curiosity #38 - Life's a pitch (and Tami Reiss tells us why)
đŸŽ€ Quotable Quote “You’re not just delegating—you’re deputizing.”— Tami Reiss That’s not just a clever word swap. It’s a leadership gut check. Because delegation says, “Here, do this task.”But deputizing says, “Here, carry this mission—and represent me while doing it.”   🧠 This week on Leadership Rules, we sat down with the brilliant and delightfully direct Tami Reiss—executi...
Curiosity #37 - If Ted Lasso gave a graduation speech
đŸŽ€Â Quotable quotes: “I realized that they were underestimating me. But it ain't about me. It's about them.”—Ted 🎓  What Would Ted Lasso Say to the Class of 2025? Well howdy there, graduates! Or any folks sitting in the audience (aka staring at your inbox) If we had to guess what Coach Ted Lasso would say at your graduation, it probably wouldn’t start with a Latin phrase or a quote from a Nobel...
Curiosity #36 - Lead from where you are
đŸŽ€ Quotable Quote “A leader is best when people barely know he exists
When his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.”— Lao Tzu This week on Leadership Rules, we sat down with educator-turned-edtech leader Scott Nunes, whose approach to leadership blends humility, heart, and a whole lot of hands-on wisdom—from the classroom to the C-suite.
