Curiosity #91 - Futbol Is Life!

🎤 Quotable quotes: “Futbol Is Life!"
— Dani Rojas
At the time we're writing this, we're in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup.
And honestly?
It's been fantastic.
Today, both the United States and England take the pitch with a chance to advance to the Round of 16. We'll be cheering for both.
(Yes, we know... that's a dangerous thing to admit.)
Watching the World Cup got us thinking about something unexpected.
Several years ago, we picked a television show about soccer because we thought it would teach us about leadership (jk - we didn't think that at all but what a lucky turn of events that it did!).
What we didn't expect...
...was that it would also teach us to appreciate soccer.
Or, as Dani Rojas would say...
"Futbol is life!"
🏟 Why This Matters for You
When we first watched Ted Lasso, we weren't exactly experts on the beautiful game.
Sure, we understood the basics.
There was a ball.
There were goals.
There was apparently a rule called offside that nobody could explain in under five minutes.
But as the seasons unfolded, something changed.
We found ourselves paying attention.
Not just to the characters.
To the sport itself.
The strategy.
The teamwork.
The creativity.
The way one perfectly timed pass could completely change the outcome of a match (picture Jamie Tartt - pass it to me, pass it to me).
And somewhere along the way, we became soccer fans.
Who knew?
⚽ The Leadership Lesson
That's one of the things we love most about Ted Lasso.
It reminds us that curiosity has a funny way of expanding our world.
We thought we were watching a comedy (while learning about leadership).
Instead, we learned about football chants.
Promotion and relegation.
Why every pub somehow knows exactly when to sing.
And yes...
We finally developed an appreciation for why a nil-nil draw can actually be entertaining.
(We're still working on explaining that one to our American football friends.)
Curiosity has a way of doing that.
It starts with one interest.
Then quietly introduces you to another.
🌍 More Than a Game
The World Cup is one of those rare events where billions of people are watching the same thing.
Different countries, languages and cultures. One game.
That feels pretty Ted Lasso to us.
Because Ted never believed soccer was just about soccer.
It was about bringing people together.
Helping them understand one another.
And occasionally reminding them that tea is, in fact, delicious.
(Okay... we're still divided on that last one.)
🏁 Final Thought
This week, we'll be cheering for the United States.
We'll be cheering for England.
We'll probably be shouting at the television.
And we'll definitely be smiling, because it's all a reminder of something we didn't expect when we first picked up Ted Lasso.
Sometimes the best lessons are the ones you never set out to learn.
Futbol is life.
At least this month.

What's something you became interested in completely by accident?
A hobby?
A sport?
A television show?
Bonus question:
Who's your favorite Ted Lasso footballer?
(And if your answer isn't Dani Rojas, we'd still love to hear your reasoning.)

Sometimes we do this in a crowd - sometimes we do this with Marnie's daughter. Here Josie is testing out our app Blue (coming super soon!) to app for graduate school. The essay hooks made for a great lunchtime chat.
Believe!
