Curiosity #4 Billy Brimblecom Jr; How you do everything

🎤 Quotable quote: "How you do anything is how you do everything." Lead it Like Lasso

We say that quote at least once a day. And we are never surprised when we talk to someone and they share how their core values spill over into everything they do. It is certainly true about this week’s podcast guest, Billy Brimblecom Jr - who does everything with the Soul of a Drummer.

We are insanely jazzed to have talked to Billy (pun intended). He is the Executive Director of Steps of Faith Foundation and founder of Thundergong! He started as a professional drummer and now runs an organization to provide prosthetics to uninsured amputees. Listen in to his story of leadership (and pretty cool gig he has coming up).

Billy tells great stories - don’t miss his thoughts on:

  • The story behind the Steps of Faith Foundation and what inspired him to start this journey
  • Thundergong! the vision and evolution
  • Conquering self-doubt
  • How improv changed the way he thinks
  • You don’t have to wait to make a difference

... and there is plenty more. This chat is a great listen for Ted Lasso fans, music fans, and leaders of others. But most importantly ... leaders of themselves.

More leadership musings

🍪 Biscuits with the Boss icebreaker: What’s one lesson you learned about yourself this year? What is something that makes you tick?

As the nights get chillier and the leaves get more colorful, it is a good time to begin to reflect on the year. In the same way that computer operating systems get upgrades, have you made an upgrade in your personal operating system this year?

We would love to hear if you have, just shoot us a note 🗒️ If you want to learn about personal operating systems and how to create your own, check out our blog here.

🏅Whistle. Whistle. Roy's tough love advice: As you reflect on your own upgrades (and maybe those you want to make), Roy would say: Stop Waiting for the “Perfect” Time.

Remember when Roy and Jamie Tartt were talking in Sam’s restaurant and Roy agrees to train Jamie. Jamie asks when they start and Roy smacks the meatball off Jamie’s fork and says right now!

There is a saying in landscaping that the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The next best time is now. The same goes with our own improvement. Don’t wait until next year to be better. Start right now ;)

Bonus points to Craig Anderson who completed the pitch deck challenge in the How to Lead It Like Lasso MasterClass - notice that his first core value aligns with today's quotable quote!

📚Beard’s collection: Recommended books and articles

đź“– Johnson, Claire Hughes. Scaling People. Stripe Press, 2022.

In Scaling People, Claire Hughes Johnson, COO of Stripe, shares invaluable insights on managing a rapidly growing organization. This book focuses on strategic communication, leadership development, and building robust operational frameworks essential for scaling effectively. But most importantly for folks aiming to level up, she created the Working with Me doc that inspired our Personal Operating System.

đź“– Clear, James. Atomic Habits. Avery, 2018.

James Clear's Atomic Habits offers a powerful look at how minor changes can lead to remarkable results. This book is essential for anyone looking to understand how small adjustments in habits can transform personal and professional life. 1% better each day!!! (Roy would say - start today!)

đź“– Hardy, Darren. The Compound Effect. Vanguard Press, 2010.

Darren Hardy illustrates in The Compound Effect how small, consistent actions can lead to significant life changes over time. This practical guide will help you understand the power of daily choices in creating a path to success. (What Roy said ;) )

This week in Here - There - Every F'ing where

We had a great time with our friends at The Teacher’s Pep Rally podcast.

We did a webinar on Leading with Purpose where we discussed the power of understanding one’s personal operating system.

Shout out to Christa (CJ) Jimenez who adopted a portion of our personal operating system. She shared a link so you can steal it too!

🎤 Quotable quotes: "It’s easy to find knowledge. The hard part is figuring out how to use it." — The Business of You Ted Lasso could have holed up in a library, surrounded by soccer manuals, whispering “offsides” to himself until it stuck. He could have memorized player stats like they were the lyrics to Let It Go.
